Cultivation of Rice

Pakistani Basmati Rice: is famous for its aroma and taste. This is due to the right weather, specific soil, irrigated water and the farmers’ skill. Rice is an important crop of autumn which requires moist and hot weather. It is cultivated in early May and goes under various phases from cultivation to harvesting.

Preparation of Soil: The soil is broken from lumps ploughing four times by conventional ways and two to three times by tractors. First the fields are leveled for equal irrigation and then water is allowed to 6” level and is not allowed to dry unless the whole crop is cultivated.

Eradication of Unwanted vegetation
This is done to stop growth of unwanted plants. It is undertaken when the water level is high enough in the field. The field is fed periodically every week and is ploughed twice with a leveling wooden beam.

Nursery
To start with nursery, plants are prepared and after 25 to 30 days. They are then transferred to the field.

Rice crop after 70 days
The crop bears fruit after 70 days and the plant is at its full bloom at this time. After this, the upper part of the plant starts drying.

Ready Rice Crop to Harvest
The ripening time of the crop is 110 days and water is stopped a week before to facilitate its harvesting, keeping the whole plant in full dry state.

Harvesting of rice crop
When the rice crop is completely dried it is harvested by various machines.

Separation of Paddy from Husk by Machine
Harvested crop is exposed to sun for one or two days so that it may dry completely. Later is passed through the process.

Manually Separation of Paddy
Manual process for separation of husk is undertaken to reduce breakage of rice grains.
